Once again, my favorite time of year is upon us. I love the crisp air, fall cooking, everything pumpkin and the glorious colors of the leaves changing. We live in an area here in Virginia where we are surrounded by large oak and maple trees. We noticed something peculiar last year. Where were the acorns? That caused us to do a little research. Well, evidently based on the species of oak tree they do not produce acorns every year. This year we are already dodging falling acorns and the leaves have not even changed color yet. We realized the culprits this early are those darling, fast squirrels. Oh are their cheeks full! They must have really missed munching on them last year! They like to perch in the branches right above where we sit and eat a few and then throw them overboard and it is like a rain shower. Of course, Eli, our German Shorthaired Pointer thinks they are nuggets of gold! We have had to train him to bring them to us instead of hiding them in his cheek. Sometimes though, he will just carry it around under his lip like a prize possession and eventually just drops it on the floor. By the time the leaves really start falling it will be like walking on marbles. But I just love them! Happy Fall!
